Can you hate Google

by Simon Morley on August 17, 2010

Google and Facebook are the two most visited sites in the world right now. In 20 years, which one do you think is still going to be around?

With Google using Chrome to force us into a total in-browser experiece, I expect Google’s trying hard to make sure we can never leave them. But is Facebook already ahead with it’s simple API and significant quantity of apps?

And, can our whole operating system exist in a browser window?

Interestingly, while Google dominates search, where’s the loyalty – would you even notice if they closed down? Maybe not a few years ago, but more than certainly now.

They’ve most likely realised this and over the last 5 years, have pretty much sucked us into being totally dependant on their service. For a start:

  • Browsing
  • Searching
  • Blogging
  • Blog feeds
  • Email
  • Documents
  • Calls (Android)
  • Online advertising
  • Video

All they need is an iPad rival and the world is over.

So, if Google dies a sudden death, we’ll have to migrate a whole lot more than what we type in the address bar.

And the thing is, most of us hate dominating companies a little, even though we’d rather use what everyone else is using. However, with Google you just cannot hate them – everything they do is just too good (apart from Wave maybe).
