First impresssions count and as soon as you’ve told someone what you do, they think they know who you really are. It’s more important to get to know people properly. After all, I am not the Internet…
Consider this, I’m the owner of a Wi-Fi Hotspot company and a small web development agency. On top of this, I assist people with their online strategy, SEO, SEM and use of social media. Plus I write a lot of blogs. So, what am I supposed to say I do?
It’s not my style to say I’m a business man, Managing Director, CEO or entrepreneur. I don’t want a relationship with someone who’s just impressed with how well I’m doing. After all, just because I owned my own business at 24, doesn’t mean I’m successful. Personally, I think success is in the eye of the beholder. There’s a lot more I want to do with my life before I call myself successful, including doing a full Ironman triathlon. Don’t forget, success doesn’t have to be just in the business arena.
Relationships are about mutual understanding, compassion and interest. Someone once told me that the people who go furthest in life are the people who get on with the most people.
When I meet people in social environments, I often say I’m an abseiling window cleaner. It’s much easier to build relationships that last if you know the person you’ve just met is genuinely interested in you. Not just how much cash you have in the bank.
Chris Brogan’s recently written a good blog about this too.
